Lion Air 737 Max 8 Crashes into Sea After Takeoff

Lion Air has confirmed flight JT-610 to Pangkalpinang, Indonesia with 189 people onbord crashed near Kerawang shortly after takeoff from Jakarta Soekarno Hatta International Airport. The aircraft was a new Boeing 737 MAX 8 which was manufactured earlier this year and put into service by Lion Air in August.

The flight scheduled to take just over an hour crashed into the Java Sea 13 minutes after takeoff.

The airline reports 178 adults, 1 child and 2 infants were aboard the flight along with 6 flight attendants and 2 flight crew. Captain Bhavye Suneja and co-pilot Havino had over 11,000 combined flight hours.
